  Ventura Geo Score

The Ventura GeoScore (VGS) measures the strength of a cross between two ancestors by comparing how many G1 Winners it should have got (based on a complex and carefully calibrated formula) to how many G1 Winners it actually did get.

When the number of G1Ws produced by a cross equals the number of G1Ws it was predicted to get, the cross gets a Ventura GeoScore of 1.00, which is the baseline for all scores.

When a cross gets a Ventura GeoScores over 1.00, that means it outperformed opportunity; and when a cross gets a Ventura GeoScore under 1.00, that means it underperformed opportunity.

Higher VGSs should be sought by breeders and lower VGSs avoided.

An important thing about the Ventura GeoScore program is that it bases its predictions of how many G1 Winners a cross ought to have got not only on the number of G1 Winners with Strain A and Strain B, but also on the degree of Geographic Overlap between the two G1 Winning descendant populations and the sireside/damside concentrations of Strain A and Strain B in each individual Country.

For this reason a cross won’t get a high score merely because Strain A and Strain B both stood in the same Country.

Also, neither will a cross get a low score merely because Strain A and Strain B are both concentrated in the Stallion Population as opposed to the Broodmare Population (or the Broodmare Population as opposed to the Stallion Population).

To use an example, Kingmambo and Sadlers Wells both more commonly come though the sireside as opposed to the damside and in calculating the VGS for this cross, the program takes this into account.

Regional Scores provide you with individualized scores for a particular Country, and the Ventura GeoScore provides you with a score based on the cross’s World-Wide Performance and is therefore based on the maximum amount of relevant data.
